Inside the AI Ecosystem: How OpenAI and HubSpot Are Building the Future Together

AI adoption is accelerating across industries—from coding to healthcare to financial services. But what's actually working? And how should platforms work together to unlock AI's full potential?

At INBOUND 2025, HubSpot's EVP of Product Karen Ng sat down with Olivier Godement, Head of Platform Product at OpenAI, to pull back the curtain on what they're seeing, building, and betting on for the future.

WHERE AI ADOPTION IS REALLY HAPPENING

AI started with knowledge work—ChatGPT helping people write better. Now it's going much deeper.

"We're seeing AI being adopted... going deeper and deeper into the workflows that are actually the beating heart of the business," Godement said.

Coding is massive. Millions of developers use OpenAI's models, and at OpenAI itself, a significant portion of code is AI-written. But it's expanding into customer service (T-Mobile), healthcare (drug discovery), and financial services.

The biggest challenge: permissions. "You have to make sure that the LLM is not going to just retrieve the notes of my CFO and show it to me," Godement explained. Making AI respect data access is one of OpenAI's biggest focuses.

WHAT GOOD AI PARTNERSHIPS LOOK LIKE

The HubSpot-OpenAI connector is a case study in effective partnership. Godement outlined three keys:

  • The right data: Models are only as good as the context you provide. HubSpot data behind the firewall makes ChatGPT smarter for business users.
  • The right UX: Models aren't like any software before. "Working with companies who have been sweating the details of these tools with customers for years is usually how we find the right form factor."
  • Exploring together: "I believe we've touched 1% of the applications that we could do," Godement said. The best partners discover new use cases together.
Godement's advice was simple:
"Things are going to get even more crazy. My single biggest advice: try, try, try it out. The pace at which technology is changing, you should try every three months... I bet you some stuff that you thought would be completely impossible, you'll be surprised how many of those are being knocked down one by one."
THE LITMUS TEST FOR AI VALUE

Godement shared two simple ways to know if AI is delivering real value:

"If we shut down everything tomorrow, how much of that is a complete blow to the way you work?" If it's just "nice to have," you're not there yet.

Second, watch your best customers. "Whatever those customers are doing, all the others will do it in six months or a year." Are they using it every day? That's the signal.

Empower your builders—the subject matter experts who love to optimize. They're the ones who'll make new use cases emerge.
