As I drove to work today, banging my car into the gaping potholes on Grand Ave, I saw a Colgate ad, a billboard for CRM software, and because it’s Portland, ads for twelve marijuana shops. As I bumped along, I thought how all these ads inundated my subconscious like a tidal wave. Will I buy Colgate today? CRM software? No. I’ve become comfortably numb to the ads all around. On average, 5000 ads bombard the consumer every day. Think about that. And nearly all will fail to inspire action. What a waste of business resources, I thought, as I jostled down the road. But there is a better way that most companies haven’t discovered, which means a huge opportunity for the few that nail it. I’m talking about storytelling. Not the recounting of facts... REAL storytelling. A well-crafted story’s ability to spur action is backed by extensive scientific study.
