Speaker Spotlights: Barack Obama and Viola Davis

INBOUND plays host to world leaders in business, entertainment, activism, philanthropy, and politics each year. This year, INBOUND 2022 will host two of the most inspiring Black icons in recent years: President Barack Obama and actor, producer, and philanthropist Viola Davis.

President Barack H. Obama

Barack H. Obama is the 44th President of the United States and the first Black leader to hold the office. Born in Hawaii to a mother from Kansas and a father from Kenya, Obama has devoted his life to giving every child the same chance America gave him, regardless of their background.

President Obama began his public career as a community organizer, civil rights attorney, and academic. He then became a state senator for the 13th District of Illinois, then a U.S. Senator, before running for President. His leadership as President was critical in shaping the country, as he helped to usher in a stronger economy and create a more equal society.

Viola Davis

Viola Davis is an actor, producer, and philanthropist, and is a graduate of the Juilliard School. She received an Honorary Doctorate during the school’s 109th Commencement Ceremony and holds an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts degree from Rhode Island College.

Viola Davis was nominated for Oscars for her roles in The Help (2011) and Doubt (2008) and won Oscar and Tony awards for her work on Fences (2016). Davis also won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her work in ABC's How To Get Away With Murder. She was the first Black woman in history to win that Emmy award and is the first Black woman to win a Tony, Oscar, and Emmy.

Howard University and HubSpot: Partnering in Both Business and Education

Howard University, the world-famous historically Black university in Washington D.C., recently partnered with HubSpot to further their shared goal of a more inclusive and equitable future.

Dr. Yuvay Meyers Ferguson will speak at a special session on Wednesday, September 7th at 2:15 pm. She’ll share how Howard University and HubSpot built the Center for Digital Business and expanded related business education offerings and programming. The session will also explore how Howard University has used HubSpot to support its community of alumni and partners.

A career academic, Dr. Ferguson most recently served as the Assistant Dean of Impact and Engagement at Howard and is currently an Associate Professor of Marketing at Howard University’s School of Business.
